Mauritania's Ambitious Energy Transformation: Privatising Power Generation and Leading in Green Hydrogen
Key Ideas
  • Mauritania plans to fully privatise its power generation sector, with upcoming bids for an independent power plant connected to the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim gas project.
  • All new power generation projects in Mauritania will be private, aiming to increase access to electricity and support inclusive economic growth.
  • The country is set to become a leader in Africa's energy sector by leveraging its gas, solar, and wind resources, with a focus on green hydrogen projects and updated regulatory frameworks.
  • The energy roadmap includes expanding gas fields, increasing LNG production, enhancing regional electricity trade, and ongoing investment in the mining sector.
Minister Mohamed Ould Khaled of Mauritania announced plans to fully privatise the country's power generation sector at the Invest in African Energy 2025 Forum in Paris. The shift towards private power generation aims to drive industrial growth, improve electricity access, and support inclusive economic development. Two independent power producer projects, fueled by domestic gas, will supply 550 MW to the national grid in the coming years. The country's energy strategy focuses on tapping into gas and renewable energy potential. The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim gas project, in collaboration with Senegal, will play a significant role in this plan, fueling power plants in both countries. Mauritania aims to reach full national electricity coverage by 2030, with ambitions to become a leader in Africa's energy space. Notably, Mauritania is positioning itself as a green hydrogen leader in Africa, with plans to produce 12 million tons of green hydrogen annually. To support this transformation, the country has modernised its regulatory frameworks, introduced new policies, and launched Africa's first green hydrogen code. The future energy roadmap includes expanding gas fields, increasing LNG production, boosting regional electricity trade, and ongoing investments in the mining sector. These developments mark a significant milestone in Mauritania's energy journey, showcasing its commitment to sustainable energy and economic growth.
