Addressing the Challenge of Harmonizing Hydrogen Quality Standards Across the Value Chain
Key Ideas
  • The hydrogen sector faces a challenge in establishing a standard quality specification that caters to all stakeholders in the value chain.
  • EASEE-gas initiated the development of a Common Business Practice to harmonize hydrogen quality standards for the industry.
  • The Common Business Practice aims to create a specification applicable to repurposed natural gas pipelines and networks handling hydrogen.
  • The focus is on ensuring safety, reliability, and compatibility throughout the production and usage of hydrogen.
The hydrogen sector is in need of a comprehensive quality standard that can effectively address the diverse needs of stakeholders along the entire value chain. One of the critical issues faced by the industry is the absence of a single hydrogen quality specification that can accommodate the requirements of various players, from production facilities to industrial users utilizing hydrogen as a feedstock in their processes. Moreover, repurposed natural gas pipelines pose a unique challenge in terms of ensuring the compatibility and safety of hydrogen transportation. To tackle these challenges, the European Association for the Streamlining of Energy Exchange – Gas (EASEE-gas) embarked on drafting a Common Business Practice (CBP) to streamline hydrogen quality specifications. This initiative aims to establish a harmonized standard that can be applied across systems initially designed for natural gas transmission but repurposed for hydrogen transport. By focusing on safety, reliability, and compatibility, the CBP seeks to pave the way for the seamless integration of hydrogen within the existing infrastructure, fostering the growth of the hydrogen economy.
