ANEMEL Project: Pioneering Green Hydrogen Production from Low-Quality Water Sources
Key Ideas
  • The ANEMEL project, based in Galway, Ireland, aims to produce green hydrogen sustainably from low-quality water sources like seawater and wastewater.
  • Funded by the European Innovation Council, researchers are developing efficient electrolysers powered by renewable technologies, reducing costs and improving recyclability.
  • ANEMEL focuses on making electrolysers compatible with impurities in water to enable robust, long-lasting hydrogen production that competes with fossil fuels.
  • Recent achievements include developing a 1kW electrolyser for efficient green hydrogen production and overcoming challenges related to impure water conditions.
The ANEMEL project, led by the University of Galway in Ireland and funded by the European Innovation Council, is making significant strides in sustainable green hydrogen production. By focusing on developing efficient electrolysers powered by renewable technologies, the project aims to reduce costs and improve recyclability. Working in partnership with nine organizations across Europe, ANEMEL has reached important milestones in its quest for cost-effective and sustainable hydrogen production. The project's main goal is to develop water electrolysers that break down water into oxygen and hydrogen using electricity, critical for the hydrogen economy's growth. By making electrolysers compatible with impurities in water, ANEMEL seeks to address challenges faced by traditional electrolysis methods. The project aims to reduce the hazardousness of electrolysis by using less concentrated solutions and exploring cheaper, more abundant materials for components. One key aspect of ANEMEL is its focus on anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysers over polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) ones. By operating under conditions that mimic impure water with salts, the project aims to demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of AEM electrolysers. Recent achievements include the development of a 1kW electrolyser for efficient green hydrogen production and advancements in overcoming operational challenges related to impure water conditions. By focusing on creating long-lasting, robust electrolysers, ANEMEL aims to make clean hydrogen production economically competitive with fossil fuels.
