The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced its partnership with Azerbaijan to assist in implementing the country's National Hydrogen Strategy. Azerbaijan's strategic geographical position, abundant renewable energy resources in the Caspian Sea and East Azerbaijan, and access to natural gas reserves like the Shah Deniz field provide a strong foundation for developing a low-carbon hydrogen sector. The EBRD highlights the potential for both green and blue hydrogen initiatives in Azerbaijan, emphasizing the country's competitiveness in hydrogen production compared to EU countries, especially with the optimized use of wind and solar energy sources. The partnership aims to not only tap into the export potential of hydrogen but also focus on domestic consumption to decarbonize industries and support national decarbonization goals. By integrating hydrogen into local sectors, Azerbaijan can significantly contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Southern Gas Corridor presents a crucial opportunity for Azerbaijan to export hydrogen to Europe, requiring collaboration among regional stakeholders. The EBRD's proposed assignment will provide essential support to the Government of Azerbaijan in planning regulatory and policy actions necessary to excel in the hydrogen sector and achieve its goals. This collaborative effort, guided by strategic investments and a national roadmap, has the potential to position Azerbaijan as a key player in the global hydrogen market, showcasing the country's commitment to a sustainable and innovative hydrogen economy.
