European aviation and fuel industry representatives have issued an “urgent call” for accelerated policy support for sustainable aviation fuel deployment across the EU. The industry highlights the need to address the challenges hindering the scale-up of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) production, including the substantial price gap compared to conventional kerosene. Next-generation SAF pathways like e-SAF and advanced biofuels are facing barriers in accessing investment and reaching final investment decisions. The industry partners have presented a 10-point action plan aimed at overcoming early-mover disadvantages and catalyzing the scale-up of SAF production. The plan focuses on regulatory and financial measures to de-risk investments, bridge cost gaps, and incentivize innovation in fuel technologies crucial for decarbonizing air transport. They stress the importance of accelerating the availability and affordability of SAF to achieve the EU and aviation industry's goal of net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. The plan proposes various measures such as extending EU ETS mechanisms, increasing funding for advanced bio-SAF and e-SAF projects, tailoring financial products to suit the needs of SAF projects, and creating regulatory certainty instruments. The industry emphasizes the need for collaboration between policymakers and industry stakeholders to ensure a timely and robust ramp-up of SAF in Europe, part of a broader strategy for a sustainable European aviation industry.
