The government of India has released a report focusing on the transition to Battery Electric Trucks (BETs) in the medium and heavy-duty truck sector to reduce pollution and fuel consumption significantly by mid-century. Titled 'ZET Adoption in India and its Impact on Emission and Energy,' the report underscores the importance of supportive policies to accelerate zero-emission trucking (ZET) adoption and help achieve India's net-zero goals by 2070. The freight sector in India, mainly driven by medium and heavy-duty trucks, plays a crucial role in economic growth but is a major contributor to fuel consumption and emissions. With the rising freight demand, sustainable transport solutions are being pursued, with BETs assumed to be the primary zero-emission technology due to current green hydrogen production costs and infrastructure limitations. The report provides detailed projections on BET adoption, emission savings, and fuel/electricity demand reduction based on expert insights and historical data. Principal Scientific Adviser Ajay Kumar Sood highlights ZET adoption as a vital step in reducing emissions and improving air quality in India, emphasizing the role of electrification in shaping a cleaner logistics ecosystem.
