India and the European Union have jointly embarked on two substantial research projects under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council, focusing on combatting marine pollution and advancing green hydrogen production. The total investment in these initiatives amounts to ₹391 crore (€41 million), signifying a significant step towards enhancing collaboration in science, technology, and sustainability between the two regions. The first project targets the reduction of marine plastic litter and pollutants threatening ocean ecosystems, supported by both the EU and India's Ministry of Earth Sciences. It aligns with global efforts such as the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and respective national policies. On the other hand, the second project aims to develop technologies to transform biogenic waste into green hydrogen, addressing the objectives of the EU Hydrogen Strategy and India's National Green Hydrogen Mission. High-ranking officials from both sides have acknowledged the critical role of joint research in addressing environmental issues and promoting sustainable development. The collaboration offers a platform for researchers from both India and the EU to work together on pioneering solutions. This partnership sets the stage for driving innovative technologies that combat environmental degradation and propel advancements in renewable energy.
