In a significant development, the Government of India has initiated the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India (GHCI) as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. This scheme establishes a formal process to certify green hydrogen production, ensuring it is derived from renewable energy sources and meets strict emissions criteria. With a focus on reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports and decarbonising key sectors, India is set to become a major player in the global green hydrogen market. The GHCI sets a maximum greenhouse gas emissions threshold of 2.0 kgCO2eq per kg of hydrogen, mandating that only hydrogen meeting this standard is certified as green. The certification framework outlines eligibility norms for production pathways, including electrolysis powered by renewable electricity and biomass conversion methods. It also includes detailed quantification techniques for emissions and requires independent assessment by Accredited Carbon Verification agencies recognised by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. By implementing this certification system, India aligns with international practices, boosting investor confidence and supporting renewable developers, industrial users, and exporters. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, backed by significant funding, aims to enhance India's self-reliance in clean energy technologies and reduce carbon emissions across various industries such as refining, fertilisers, and steel.
