India has taken significant steps towards the development of green hydrogen, as announced by Santosh Kumar Sarangi, the Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The country has allocated substantial production and manufacturing capacities for green hydrogen to various companies, with a focus on pilot projects in sectors like steel, mobility, and shipping. India's vision includes achieving energy independence by 2047 and Net Zero emissions by 2070, positioning itself as a global leader in renewable energy. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023 with an initial budget of $2.4 billion, aims to ramp up green hydrogen production to 5 million metric tonnes by 2030, while also attracting significant investments and creating employment opportunities. To facilitate this mission, green hydrogen and green ammonia plants have been exempted from environmental clearance, and major ports like Kandla, Paradip, and Tuticorin have been identified as future Green Hydrogen hubs. Moreover, several states in India have introduced supportive policies to encourage the growth of green hydrogen. The country's strategic vision includes not only meeting domestic demand but also becoming a key exporter of green hydrogen by 2030, contributing significantly to global decarbonisation efforts. India's efforts underline a positive and proactive approach towards embracing sustainable energy practices and fostering economic growth through the green hydrogen sector.
