JCB, a renowned British manufacturer of materials handling, construction, and agricultural equipment, has achieved a significant milestone by securing full European Union approval for its groundbreaking hydrogen engine designed for non-road mobile machinery. The company's hydrogen engine, a product of extensive research and development over almost four years involving 150 engineers and a substantial investment of £100 million, has been recognized as the first operational combustion engine powered by hydrogen. This approval, granted under the EU's prevailing Stage V emissions norms, follows earlier approvals by licensing authorities in nine mainland European countries, allowing commercial utilization of the hydrogen engine under special provisions for new technologies. Anthony Bamford, the chairman of JCB, who spearheaded the hydrogen engine project, expressed his excitement over this achievement, highlighting the engine's potential to contribute to a net-zero world by utilizing hydrogen as a zero CO2 fuel, steering away from traditional fossil fuels. The successful EU type-approval signifies a positive outlook for JCB's hydrogen program and the future of combustion engines, debunking previous notions of their obsolescence in Europe.
