Australia's regional city of Geelong has marked a significant milestone with the launch of the country's first hydrogen refuelling station. The facility not only provides hydrogen-powered and emission-free heavy vehicles but also offers fast charging services for commercial electric vehicles. Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles commended the station as a crucial step towards the future, emphasizing hydrogen's role in decarbonising the Australian economy and addressing global climate challenges. Viva Energy's chief strategy officer highlighted the station's contribution to reducing emissions and promoting sustainability in the heavy transport sector. The station, capable of dispensing 300kg of hydrogen every two hours, aims to offer a seamless refuelling experience for trucks, positioning hydrogen as a viable commercial fuel. By using renewable electricity to generate green hydrogen and collaborating with vehicle operators, the project sets the stage for a more sustainable transport ecosystem. With plans to sell hydrogen to other commercial customers, the initiative in Geelong signifies a shift towards innovative energy solutions and a more environmentally conscious approach to transportation.
