Sitav, an Italian rolling stock maintenance company, introduced its prototype hydrogen locomotive at the Hydrogen Expo in Piacenza. Despite being in the prototype phase, the locomotive has progressed successfully through initial approval stages, focusing on obtaining full operational certification. The modular design of the vehicle allows for flexibility to meet various operational needs, alongside features like a remote diagnostics system for monitoring, energy recovery during braking, and the use of low-pressure hydrogen for refueling ease and safety. The collaboration with partners such as OMG Manufacturing, BluEnergy Revolution, and Dako-CZ has been crucial in advancing the project. Sitav's upcoming showcase of the hydrogen fuel cell locomotive at EXPO Ferroviaria signifies a commitment to innovation and sustainability in rail transport. By replacing diesel power units with hydrogen fuel cell systems, Sitav aims to contribute to the decarbonisation efforts within the railway sector, supported by collaborations with organizations like the Italian Electrotechnical Committee (CEI) to promote hydrogen technology for rail applications.
