South Korea's Three-step Cooperation Plan for Development of Natural Resources in Central Asia
Key Ideas
- South Korea emphasizes collaboration in natural resources as a key area for cooperation with Central Asian countries.
- The three steps outlined include establishing a common science and research center, developing a logistics strategy for mineral transportation, and focusing on the restoration of oil and gas fields.
- The potential for producing blue hydrogen from gas production in countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan is highlighted as a sustainable energy option.
- The aim is to explore ways to enhance economic development in the region through strategic partnerships and resource utilization.
At the II Forum of Think Tanks of the Republic of Korea and Central Asia, Cho Seong-jun, Chief Geophysicist of the Mineral Resources Department at the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, outlined South Korea's three cooperation steps for the development of natural resources in Central Asia. The first step involves establishing a common Central Asian science and research center to study issues from mineral deposit exploration to the production of high value-added goods. The second step focuses on developing a logistics strategy, particularly for the transportation of mineral resources, to address high transportation costs. Cho Seong-jun also highlighted the third step, which involves the restoration of oil and gas fields in gas-producing countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. He pointed out the potential for producing blue hydrogen from gas production, emphasizing the importance of capturing and storing carbon dioxide emitted during hydrogen production. This initiative aims to enhance economic development in the region by leveraging strategic partnerships and sustainable energy options.
