China has achieved a significant milestone by completing the world's first green ammonia ship bunkering operation at Dalian Port. Envision Energy's green hydrogen and ammonia plant in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia, produced the renewable ammonia used in this operation, marking a key advancement in maritime decarbonisation. The tugboat refueled during the operation now significantly reduces its reliance on fossil fuels by utilizing ammonia as a marine fuel, supported by an ammonia dual-fuel engine and dedicated fuel supply system. The project at Chifeng integrates a massive renewable energy system combining solar, wind, and energy storage with hydrogen and ammonia production technologies, ensuring a sustainable and dynamic power generation process. It has received certifications such as ISCC Plus and renewable ammonia certification from Bureau Veritas, highlighting its compliance with green standards. This development underscores the establishment of a complete value chain from green ammonia production to its transport, bunkering, and utilization in ammonia-powered ships.
