India Launches Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme to Drive Market Credibility and Export Growth
Key Ideas
  • The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India has launched the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme to ensure transparency and credibility in green hydrogen production.
  • The scheme aims to promote the use of green hydrogen sourced from renewables to reduce carbon emissions, boost exports, and encourage energy-intensive sectors to switch to this cleaner fuel.
  • Key port cities like Kandla, Paradip, and Tuticorin will be hubs for green hydrogen production for export, curbing greenwashing practices in the market.
  • Certification will be overseen by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency to verify compliance with set standards and prevent the misuse of certificates for emission reduction claims.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India has introduced the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to regulate and authenticate the production of green hydrogen in the country. The scheme aims to establish a robust framework for certifying green hydrogen production processes, ensuring transparency, traceability, and market credibility. By promoting the use of green hydrogen generated from renewable sources, the initiative seeks to reduce carbon emissions, facilitate exports, and encourage energy-intensive sectors to transition to this cleaner alternative. Key port cities such as Kandla, Paradip, and Tuticorin have been identified as primary centers for producing green hydrogen for export purposes. The certification process will be conducted by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency through Accredited Carbon Verification agencies to guarantee compliance with the specified standards. Certificates issued under this scheme will be non-tradeable and cannot be utilized to claim emission reduction credits, thus preventing greenwashing practices in the industry. Additionally, an offset mechanism has been introduced for sectors with high carbon footprints, enabling them to utilize green hydrogen and earn tradable credits. The certification scheme applies specifically to green hydrogen production through electrolysis or biomass conversion, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices in the production of this clean fuel.
