India's Green Hydrogen Ambition: Leading the Global Transition by 2030
Key Ideas
  • India aims to be a major global exporter of green hydrogen by 2030, leveraging its strong renewable energy base and the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
  • Significant progress has been made with allocated production and electrolyser manufacturing capacities, pilot projects in key sectors, and policy reforms.
  • Challenges like high production costs and infrastructure limitations exist, but India's proactive approach and targeted policies are expected to overcome them.
  • India's vision, policies, and execution not only target domestic needs but also position the country as a vital player in the global hydrogen economy for decarbonization.
During a keynote address at the World Hydrogen Summit 2025 in Rotterdam, India's MNRE Secretary outlined India's strategic roadmap to lead the global green hydrogen transition by 2030. The country aims not only to achieve self-sufficiency in green hydrogen but also to become a major exporter. With the National Green Hydrogen Mission launched in 2023 and an initial investment of USD 2.4 billion, significant progress has been made, including the allocation of green hydrogen production and electrolyser manufacturing capacities and the initiation of pilot projects in sectors like steel, mobility, and shipping. Various policy reforms and initiatives, such as the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme and exemptions for green hydrogen plants from environmental clearances, highlight India's commitment to accelerating the domestic hydrogen ecosystem. Despite challenges like production costs and infrastructure limitations, the Secretary expressed confidence in India's 'whole-of-government' approach. The country's ambition, along with its policies and quick execution, not only target fulfilling domestic demands but also aim to play a crucial role in the global hydrogen economy, contributing to international decarbonization efforts.
