The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced its assistance to Azerbaijan in implementing the National Hydrogen Strategy, emphasizing the country's potential to develop a low-carbon hydrogen sector. With abundant renewable energy resources in the Caspian Sea and East Azerbaijan, as well as direct access to natural gas reserves like the Shah Deniz field, Azerbaijan is well-positioned for green and blue hydrogen initiatives. The EBRD highlights that by utilizing wind and solar energy sources optimally, Azerbaijan's hydrogen production can be cost competitive, potentially rivaling European countries. Moreover, the integration of hydrogen into local industries is seen as a strategic opportunity for Azerbaijan to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors and support national decarbonization goals. The Southern Gas Corridor offers a crucial pathway for exporting hydrogen to Europe, requiring collaboration among regional stakeholders. The EBRD's support aims to help Azerbaijan plan regulatory and policy actions to realize its hydrogen potential and fulfill the hydrogen strategy outlined during COP-29. Overall, with a focus on strategic investments, a national roadmap, and collaboration, Azerbaijan has the opportunity to emerge as a key player in the global hydrogen market, aligning with its commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing low-carbon development.
