China's Green Hydrogen Revolution: Inner Mongolia to Beijing Pipeline
Key Ideas
  • China approves a major green hydrogen pipeline project led by Sinopec, transporting clean energy from Inner Mongolia to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
  • The pipeline will transport wind-powered hydrogen for industrial processes at the Yanshan petrochemical plant in Beijing, promoting large-scale green hydrogen transmission.
  • The project, set to be completed by December 2027, aims to advance large-scale green hydrogen infrastructure in China and explore integrated commercial models for hydrogen energy.
  • This initiative is a national-level experimental demonstration project and a key green hydrogen export initiative for Inner Mongolia's green hydrogen transmission pipeline network.
China has given the green light to a significant green hydrogen pipeline project led by Sinopec, aimed at transporting clean energy from Inner Mongolia to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The project, which is the first of its kind in China, will see up to 100,000 tonnes of wind-powered hydrogen annually transported from Inner Mongolia to a petrochemical plant in Beijing. This green hydrogen will be used for various industrial processes at the plant, covering functions like hydrotreating feedstocks, hydrogenation reactions, and as a fuel or reducing agent in chemical processes. The aim is to establish a large-scale green hydrogen transmission system and pilot an integrated commercial model that covers production, storage, transportation, and utilization of hydrogen energy. The approved section in Inner Mongolia spans approximately 119 kilometers, with plans to expand the capacity from 100,000 metric tons per year to 500,000 metric tons per year in the long term. The completion of this pipeline is scheduled for December 2027, positioning it as a pivotal national-level experimental project and a crucial green hydrogen export strategy for Inner Mongolia's growing green hydrogen network.
