Eskom, South Africa's leading energy provider, has announced plans to construct a pilot renewable green hydrogen facility at its Research, Testing and Development unit in Johannesburg. This initiative is crucial in achieving the country's goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. By investing in renewable green hydrogen production, Eskom aims to contribute to its decarbonisation strategy and facilitate the deployment of renewable energy as a medium to long-term energy storage solution. The construction of the Renewable Hydrogen Facility (RHF) will enable Eskom to evaluate the potential adoption of green hydrogen, understand legislative requirements, and enhance internal skills development. Eskom's Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane, emphasized the importance of transitioning to a low-carbon economy through innovative, technology-led solutions. Furthermore, Eskom's commitment to renewable energy is evident through collaborations with companies like Exxaro Resources and the establishment of a separate Renewable Energy Business. The company's focus on a balanced energy mix includes cleaner technologies such as gas, renewables, battery storage, and hydrogen to meet the growing electricity demand sustainably. The Eskom Research, Testing & Development business unit plays a key role in exploring technology solutions to enhance efficiency, reduce emissions, and facilitate the transition to low-carbon energy sources. With a pipeline of 2GW of clean energy projects by 2026 and over 20GW in development, Eskom is on track to diversify the energy system, attract investment, and create long-term value for the South African population.
