Honeywell and NTPC Green Partner to Produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel in India
Key Ideas
- Honeywell and NTPC Green have signed an MoU to explore producing sustainable aviation fuel in India using captured CO₂ and green hydrogen.
- The collaboration aims to support decarbonization objectives in the aviation sector and align with India’s energy security goals.
- The project will leverage Honeywell's eFining™ technology to convert CO₂ and green hydrogen into SAF, contributing to India's emission reduction targets.
- The study is set to be completed by mid-2025 and is expected to boost India's position as a hub for sustainable aviation fuel production and export.
Honeywell and NTPC Green have partnered to investigate the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in India by utilizing carbon dioxide (CO₂) captured from NTPC’s power plants and green hydrogen as feedstock. The collaboration involves studying the feasibility of using Honeywell’s eFining™ technology to convert the captured CO₂ and green hydrogen into SAF, supporting decarbonization efforts in the aviation sector and aligning with India’s broader energy security objectives.
The initiative, which forms part of NTPC Green's Green Hydrogen Hub in Andhra Pradesh, aims to blend SAF in jet fuel to drive early projects in green hydrogen. By leveraging Honeywell UOP’s experience in SAF production and NTPC’s green hydrogen infrastructure development, the project seeks to facilitate emissions reduction in the aviation industry.
Ranjit Kulkarni, Vice President of Honeywell India, expressed enthusiasm about advancing India's shift towards cleaner aviation fuels and working towards carbon neutrality through this partnership. The collaboration will explore ways to treat emissions from thermal energy, promote green hydrogen adoption, diversify feedstocks for SAF production, and assist India's aviation sector in achieving its environmental objectives.
The study, scheduled for completion by mid-2025, is anticipated to aid India in becoming a significant sustainable aviation fuel production and export hub while helping meet the country's emission reduction goals.
