French company Lhyfe has achieved a breakthrough by conducting successful green hydrogen combustion tests in Spain's ceramic industry, specifically in the Valencia region. The tests involved delivering three tonnes of green hydrogen over three weeks, showcasing the potential of using green hydrogen as an alternative to natural gas in industrial processes. Utilizing a blending kit developed by Lhyfe, the company demonstrated the viability of transitioning to 100% green hydrogen in high-temperature applications, with promising results and minor burner modifications. Lhyfe's plans for further expansion in Spain include a project in Vallmoll, Tarragona, with an installed capacity of 15 megawatts to produce five tonnes of green hydrogen daily starting from 2027. The Spanish government's support through a €14 million subsidy under the H2 Pioneros program highlights the growing interest in decarbonisation efforts within the country. Franz Bechtold, Lhyfe Spain's commercial director, emphasized the receptiveness of Spanish industrialists towards green hydrogen, despite the need for adaptations in certain sectors like ceramics. The successful entry into the Spanish market marks a significant milestone for Lhyfe, as it positions itself as a key player in the European green hydrogen market.
