Oman and Belgium Collaborate on Green Hydrogen Pipeline Network
Key Ideas
- Oman's state-owned natural gas network operator, OQGN, partners with Belgium's Fluxys to develop a hydrogen pipeline network, marking a significant step in Oman's green hydrogen ambitions.
- Initial plans involve developing 300 to 400 kilometers of hydrogen pipeline to support green hydrogen production capacity, with a broader vision of a 2,000-kilometer nationwide network.
- Fluxys is expected to hold a minority stake in the development and operate the network, building on a previous MOU and stake acquisition. The collaboration aims to support national targets cost-effectively.
- The partnership aims to help Oman produce up to 1.5 million tonnes of hydrogen annually by 2030, focusing on exporting to Europe, while also contributing to Belgium and Europe's renewable energy goals.
Oman's state-owned natural gas network operator, OQGN, has entered into a partnership with Belgium's Fluxys to jointly develop a hydrogen pipeline network in Oman. This collaboration signifies a significant milestone in Oman's efforts to become a major producer and exporter of green hydrogen. The initial phase of the project will see the development of 300 to 400 kilometers of hydrogen pipeline to support the growing green hydrogen production capacity in the country. This initiative is part of a larger vision to establish a nationwide hydrogen network spanning 2,000 kilometers. Fluxys, the Belgian energy infrastructure group, will have a minority stake in the project and will be responsible for owning and operating the network. The partnership between OQGN and Fluxys aims to help Oman meet its hydrogen infrastructure needs efficiently and in a cost-effective manner. Oman has been actively focusing on developing its green hydrogen sector by allocating land for large-scale production projects and launching tenders. The country aims to produce 1.5 million tonnes of hydrogen annually by 2030, with an emphasis on exporting to Europe. Pascal De Buck, CEO of Fluxys, underlined the collaboration's goal of bringing renewable hydrogen to Belgium and Europe while supporting Oman's sustainable energy objectives. In addition to the Oman project, Fluxys is also working on developing Belgium's hydrogen network after being appointed as its operator recently.
