Orica's proposed Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub is set to receive significant grant funding of up to $432 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), becoming the second recipient of the government’s Hydrogen Headstart Program. The project will utilize a 50-megawatt electrolyser powered by renewable electricity to produce hydrogen, replacing natural gas in Orica’s ammonia production at the Kooragang Island facility. ARENA's chief executive highlighted the importance of hydrogen in industrial decarbonisation, emphasizing the role of renewable hydrogen in core industrial processes like ammonia production. Once operational, the project will generate low-carbon ammonia and ammonium nitrate for applications in mining, agriculture, and other industrial sectors, contributing to Australia's clean energy transition and maintaining manufacturing strength. Orica's managing director expressed gratitude for the support, aiming to advance the decarbonisation of the Kooragang Island facility. The Hydrogen Headstart program by ARENA aims to accelerate Australia's renewable hydrogen industry by backing projects that reduce emissions, enhance industrial competitiveness, and position the country as a leader in clean energy exports.
