The global shipping industry is set to undergo a transformation with the introduction of a new policy by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that aims to penalize heavy polluters. This move, reported by the Environmental Defense Fund, is expected to significantly reduce air pollution caused by shipping vessels that heavily rely on dirty fossil fuels. The dirty fuel used in these vessels is known to produce high levels of air pollution. EDF's Natacha Stamatiou highlighted the challenge in cleaning up the shipping industry due to its heavy reliance on these fuels. The IMO's new deal will require international cargo ships to pay fees for excess pollution starting in 2028 and will also lower the allowed pollution levels, driving the industry towards adopting cleaner technologies like green hydrogen and updated wind-powered ships.
