Suntory Global Spirits, after being denied UK government funding to construct a hydrogen plant adjacent to Auchentoshan Distillery in Scotland, has launched its Green Hydrogen Vision plan. This plan aims to utilize hydrogen to reduce carbon output in the mid- to long-term. Suntory has engaged in a partnership with Yamanashi prefecture and nine companies to establish Japan's largest 16-megawatt Yamanashi Model P2G System, supplying green hydrogen to facilities like the Suntory Minami Alps Hakushu Water Plant and Hakushu Distillery. The vision includes generating energy from water and implementing it throughout the supply chain. Chief Sustainability Officer, Masaaki Fujiwara, highlighted hydrogen as a crucial element for achieving net zero emissions by 2050, emphasizing the corporation's commitment to a hydrogen society. Further goals involve creating a local production for local consumption model, utilizing renewable energy sources. Suntory also plans to explore new business avenues leveraging hydrogen energy. This initiative aligns with Japan's Basic Hydrogen Strategy of 2017, promoting hydrogen as a vital energy source for a decarbonised society.
