Tenaga Nasional Berhad Launches Green Hydrogen and Hybrid Hydro Floating Solar Hubs in Malaysia
Key Ideas
  • Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) launched a hybrid hydro floating solar hub and a green hydrogen hub in Terenggau, aiming to position Malaysia as a regional leader in the green hydrogen value chain.
  • The hybrid hydro floating solar hub will install solar panels on the Kenyir reservoir, while the green hydrogen hub will focus on developing green hydrogen, methanol, and ammonia.
  • TNB's initiatives align with Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap and Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap, showcasing a commitment to sustainability and renewable energy integration.
  • By reinforcing grid infrastructure in the area, TNB plans to support increased renewable energy integration, building on their previous plans to install 2.5 GW of hybrid hydro-floating solar projects nationwide.
Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has introduced two significant renewable energy projects in Malaysia: a hybrid hydro floating solar hub and a green hydrogen hub in Terenggau, a state in the east of the country. The hybrid hydro floating solar hub, a partnership between TNB's power generation subsidiary and Terengganu Inc., will see floating solar panels installed on the Kenyir reservoir. Concurrently, the green hydrogen hub, developed in collaboration with oil and gas company Petroliam Nasional Berhad, will focus on producing green hydrogen, methanol, and ammonia. The initiatives are part of TNB's strategy to position Malaysia as a frontrunner in the green hydrogen value chain, in line with the country's National Energy Transition Roadmap and Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap. In addition to supporting the transition to renewable energy sources, TNB plans to strengthen grid infrastructure to accommodate the increased integration of renewables, building on their earlier announcement to deploy 2.5 GW of hybrid hydro-floating solar projects nationwide. Malaysia's solar capacity has been steadily increasing, with the cumulative capacity reaching 2,306 MW by the end of 2024. These projects reflect a broader commitment to sustainability and signify TNB's proactive approach towards driving the green energy transition in the region.
