TotalEnergies is moving forward with a massive $16 billion green hydrogen and ammonia project in southern Chile through its local subsidiary TEC H2 MAG. The project aims to boost global decarbonisation efforts and solidify Chile's role in the clean energy sector. The proposed facility is extensive, incorporating a wind farm, green hydrogen electrolysers, a desalination plant, an ammonia production center, and maritime infrastructure for international shipping. Once operational by 2030, the project is set to produce up to 10,800 metric tonnes of ammonia per day for clean fuel and fertiliser exports. While Chile is rich in renewable energy resources, permitting delays have hindered progress in the green hydrogen sector. TotalEnergies expects the environmental approval process to span two years, with construction slated for 2027. Despite the regulatory challenges, the company's investment is anticipated to catalyze the development of green energy infrastructure in the region and contribute to global emissions reduction initiatives.
