During a conference in Houston, Ancap representatives revealed plans for potential carbon capture investment bidding round in 2027 as well. Geologists consider Uruguay a promising region for natural hydrogen exploration due to the significant presence of the element in its rocks. While Uruguay has a focus on green hydrogen production in its renewable energy agenda, it also acknowledges the value of natural hydrogen, which is naturally produced in the Earth's subsurface through geological processes. Santiago Ferro, responsible for energy transition at Ancap, expressed confidence in receiving offers for both natural and green hydrogen in 2026. Moreover, there are pending discussions regarding the contract specifics for the green hydrogen offshore development round that was announced in 2024. Uruguay's forward-looking approach and the exploration of natural hydrogen signify a strategic move towards diversifying its energy sources and embracing cleaner alternatives for sustainable development.
