Edmonton's First Mobile Hydrogen Fuelling Station Sparks Clean Energy Future
Key Ideas
  • Edmonton launches Alberta's first mobile hydrogen fuelling station to reduce carbon emissions and pilot clean energy solutions for municipal fleets.
  • The Azolla Biodrome station produces hydrogen on-site using methanol and deionized water, supporting light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles.
  • The pilot program aims to gather data on vehicle performance, fuel reliability, and operational logistics through 2027 with a broad coalition of partners.
  • The $6.9 million project involves industry collaboration and support from partners like Strathcona County, Sturgeon County, and various organizations.
Edmonton has launched Alberta's first mobile hydrogen fuelling station, a significant step in reducing carbon emissions and exploring clean energy solutions for municipal fleets. The Azolla Biodrome station, housed in a mobile trailer, produces hydrogen on-site using methanol and deionized water, storing it in 16 steel tanks with a capacity of 600 kilograms. Equipped with Alberta's first compliant hydrogen pump, the station can fuel around 45 light-duty vehicles or 10 transit buses per day. The pilot program, part of the Alberta Zero Emissions Fleet Fuelling initiative, will initially support Edmonton's small hydrogen fleet and expand to include more vehicles like dual-fuel transit buses and waste collection trucks. The initiative, funded by Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA), involves a coalition of partners such as Strathcona County, Sturgeon County, Azolla Hydrogen, and various other organizations. The project aims to gather data on vehicle performance, fuel reliability, and operational logistics until 2027. City officials and project partners are optimistic about the benefits of this clean energy initiative, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, innovation, and environmental stewardship in advancing hydrogen technology in Alberta and beyond.
