India's Milestone: High-Altitude Hydrogen Buses Launched in Leh
Key Ideas
  • NTPC Limited hands over five hydrogen fuel cell buses for commercial operations in Leh, marking India's first-ever deployment of hydrogen-powered buses at the world's highest altitude.
  • The Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh includes the world's first high-altitude hydrogen fueling station powered by a 1.7 MW solar plant, ensuring 100% renewable energy supply to the buses.
  • The project is set to reduce carbon emissions by 350 metric tonnes annually and produce 230 metric tonnes of pure oxygen, with senior officials praising the initiative for its environmental benefits.
  • Officials call for the rapid scaling of hydrogen technologies in the region to support Ladakh's goal of carbon neutrality, urging NTPC to share key learnings for future clean energy projects in high-altitude areas.
NTPC Limited has made a significant milestone by delivering five hydrogen fuel cell buses to the Sindhu Infrastructure Development Corporation (SIDCO) in Leh, India, on June 18, 2025. This move represents India's first-ever commercial deployment of hydrogen-powered buses, operating at an impressive altitude and setting a global benchmark. The buses are part of NTPC's Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh, which introduces the world's highest hydrogen fueling station, established in November 2024 and powered by a 1.7 MW solar plant to ensure sustainable energy for the buses. Specifically designed to withstand sub-zero conditions and the thin air at 11,562 feet, the fuel cell buses are refueled using India's initial high-pressure (350 bar) hydrogen dispensing system. The project is estimated to bring about a significant reduction of 350 metric tonnes in carbon emissions annually, while also generating 230 metric tonnes of oxygen – a quantity equivalent to the positive environmental impact of planting 13,000 trees. Senior officials, including Ladakh's Chief Secretary, have commended this innovative initiative and have called for the rapid expansion of hydrogen technologies in the region to assist Ladakh in achieving its carbon-neutral objective. Furthermore, there is a strong emphasis on the documentation of key insights from this project to aid in the advancement of similar clean energy endeavors in high-altitude regions. This push for innovation and sustainability underscores the commitment to environmental conservation and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies in combating climate change and promoting eco-friendly transportation solutions.
