Ladakh leads India's green revolution with hydrogen fuel cell buses
Key Ideas
  • Ladakh is introducing India's first hydrogen fuel cell buses, marking a significant step towards green mobility.
  • The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 350 metric tonnes annually and contribute 230 metric tonnes of oxygen.
  • Five buses with a seating capacity of 32 passengers each will run on three routes in Leh, covering around 230 km on a single charge.
The Union Territory of Ladakh is gearing up to launch India's first hydrogen fuel cell buses in an effort to promote green energy. National Thermal Power Corporation Limited handed over five hydrogen fuel cell-based buses to the State Industrial Development Corporation in a recent ceremony. These buses will run on clean energy, marking a milestone in the country's efforts towards green mobility. The project also includes a 1.7 MW solar plant at an altitude of 11,562 feet above sea level in Leh, which will produce hydrogen to power the buses. The buses will initially undergo trial runs on three routes in Leh, each with a seating capacity of 32 passengers and a range of approximately 230 km on a single charge. The initiative is a testament to India's leadership in renewable energy innovation and aligns with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions. This green initiative is not only environmentally friendly but also economically beneficial for passengers, as the fare for these buses is set to be the same as that of electric buses.
