New York State Seeks Proposals for Vessel to Transport Clean Hydrogen
Key Ideas
- New York State is offering $3.9M to support the construction or retrofit of a vessel for transporting clean hydrogen on its waterways.
- The vessel should be capable of delivering a minimum of 20,000 kg of clean hydrogen per shipment over a distance of at least 100 nautical miles.
- Proposals are solicited from teams of shipbuilders, designers, and operators with experience in clean hydrogen transport, with a 50% cost-share requirement from non-NYSERDA sources.
- The initiative aligns with New York State's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 through the use of clean energy sources.
New York State has issued a solicitation through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) seeking proposals from teams of shipbuilders, ship designers, and operators to construct or retrofit a vessel capable of transporting clean hydrogen on the state's waterways. The state is willing to provide $3.9M in funding to support this initiative. The proposed vessel should have the capacity to transport a minimum of 20,000 kg of clean hydrogen per shipment, covering a minimum distance of 100 nautical miles. Eligible project teams in New York State must collaborate with a clean hydrogen fuel supplier to qualify for the opportunity. While the vessel is not required to be hydrogen-powered, NYSERDA prefers teams with prior experience in designing, building, and operating vessels for clean hydrogen or alternative fuels. Proposals are expected to be submitted by 1 October 2025, with a minimum 50% cost-share requirement from sources other than NYSERDA. NYSERDA's president and chief executive, Doreen M Harris, expressed the importance of investing in innovative solutions to facilitate the delivery of clean hydrogen, emphasizing its role in New York State's clean energy transition. This initiative forms part of the state's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 leveraging clean energy sources.
