Air travel is a major contributor to global carbon emissions, with liquid fossil fuels powering most aircraft. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), derived from biological sources like waste cooking oil, can reduce carbon intensity by over 80%. However, challenges such as limited supply, cost barriers, and uncertain demand hinder its adoption. Recognizing this, RMI and partners established a buyers alliance to aggregate demand for sustainable fuel. The Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance (SABA) unites companies seeking to reduce emissions from air travel. SABA leverages SAF certificates to provide verifiable emissions reductions corresponding to sustainable fuel use. This initiative not only supports the growth of sustainable aviation fuel production but also demonstrates a strong market demand for cleaner air travel options. Through philanthropic support and innovative partnerships, the alliance aims to revolutionize the aviation industry by making sustainable fuel a mainstream choice for corporate air travel, thereby contributing to a greener future.
