In a significant move towards climate neutrality, the European Commission has approved a €400m state aid scheme in Spain to accelerate renewable hydrogen production. This initiative is part of the EU's strategy to decarbonize the economy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The funding will support the construction of 345 MW of electrolyser capacity, aiming to produce 221,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen and avoid one million tonnes of CO₂ emissions. The scheme, managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure, and Environment Executive Agency, will award funding through a competitive process to ensure the selection of impactful projects. Companies building new electrolysers meeting EU standards for renewable fuels will be eligible for grants based on hydrogen production, aligning with Spain's target to install 12 GW of electrolyser capacity by 2030. This effort falls under the European Hydrogen Bank, which aims to bridge the investment gap in renewable hydrogen and propel Europe towards producing or importing 20 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen by 2030.
