Uniper Partners with ITM Power for UK Green Hydrogen Plant Expansion
Key Ideas
  • Uniper selects ITM Power to supply 120MW of electrolysers for its UK green hydrogen plant, emphasizing a commitment to sustainable energy production.
  • ITM's Poseidon process modules will be used at the Humber H2ub project in Killingholme, showcasing technological innovation in the green hydrogen sector.
  • The collaboration between Uniper and Phillips 66 demonstrates a strategic move towards reducing emissions and promoting the use of green hydrogen in refinery operations.
  • The project's use of standardised skid-mounted electrolyser units signals a shift towards large-scale green hydrogen projects for industrial applications.
Uniper, a German energy major, has chosen ITM Power to provide 120MW of electrolysers for its UK green hydrogen plant, which is in the running for government funding. The project, located at Uniper's existing Killingholme site under the name Humber H2ub, will incorporate six of ITM's 20MW Poseidon process modules. This marks the first time ITM has publicly announced the use of Poseidon systems in a specific project, highlighting their growing presence in the industry. The electrolysers, based on 2MW stacks, are designed for larger-scale initiatives, demonstrating a push towards more extensive green hydrogen production. Moreover, Uniper's partnership with Phillips 66 aims to supply green hydrogen to the latter's Humber refinery, with the goal of replacing some of the refinery's fuel gas in fired heaters. This collaboration signifies a strategic effort to transition towards cleaner energy sources and reduce carbon emissions in industrial processes. The utilization of standardized skid-mounted electrolyser units showcases a shift towards efficient and scalable green hydrogen solutions for industrial applications, reflecting a broader trend in the energy sector towards sustainable practices.
