Natural hydrogen, also referred to as white hydrogen, is a free gas found in hydrothermal systems, the oceanic crust, geysers, volcanic gases, and the continental crust of the Earth. This clean energy source, cleaner than fossil fuels, releases water when burned, contributing to the decarbonization process in industries. Recently, researchers discovered a large deposit of natural hydrogen in an Albanian mine, with an emission rate of approximately 220 tons per annum. The high purity of the gas, consisting of 84% hydrogen, makes it a potential new source of primary energy. The location of the mine within an ophiolitic geological formation has made it possible for the hydrogen to be released from the reaction of iron-rich rock with water. This discovery opens the door for further exploration of natural hydrogen streams, providing a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to current commercial hydrogen production methods. The potential benefits of utilizing natural hydrogen extend to industries such as aeronautics, where it can be used as drinking water for astronauts, showcasing the versatility and safety of this energy source.
