Boosting Renewable Hydrogen Development Across the EU
Key Ideas
- Nearly €1 billion awarded to 15 renewable hydrogen projects in the EU, aiming to produce 2.2 million tonnes over ten years and reduce 15 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.
- The projects will receive EU funding from the Innovation Fund sourced from the EU Emissions Trading System, helping to bridge the production cost gap and accelerate the deployment of cleaner fuels.
- Spain, Lithuania, and Austria are allocating national funding for hydrogen projects, showcasing joint efforts to scale up hydrogen production across the EU.
- The European Hydrogen Bank aims to facilitate domestic production and imports, supporting the EU's target to produce 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen by 2030 as part of the REPowerEU plan.
The European Commission has chosen 15 renewable hydrogen production projects in the European Economic Area to receive nearly €1 billion in funding. These projects, spread across five countries, are expected to produce 2.2 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen over a decade, leading to a reduction of over 15 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. The hydrogen will be utilized in various sectors such as transportation, the chemical industry, methanol, and ammonia production. The selected projects will help replace natural gas, coal, and oil in hard-to-decarbonize industries, contributing to a decrease in fossil fuel usage and increasing the EU's energy independence. With a subsidy to bridge production costs, the projects will aid in the acceleration of cleaner fuel deployment. Additionally, Spain, Lithuania, and Austria are providing national funding for hydrogen projects through the 'Auctions-as-a-Service' feature, aligning with the EU's goal of scaling up hydrogen production. The European Hydrogen Bank aims to boost domestic production and imports of renewable hydrogen to meet the EU's target of 10 million tonnes by 2030, supporting the transition to climate neutrality.
