Croatia's INA Rijeka Refinery Pioneers Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production
Key Ideas
- INA successfully completed a pilot at its Rijeka refinery, confirming the production of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel.
- Collaboration with Chevron Lummus Global led to modifications enabling biogenic feedstock processing within existing infrastructure.
- The pilot program met ISCC standards for sustainable biofuels, certifying the production process.
- INA's green hydrogen project at Rijeka refinery aims to produce green hydrogen by 2027, further aligning with sustainability goals.
INA Industrija Nafte DD in Croatia, part of the MOL Group, has demonstrated the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel at its Rijeka refinery. The successful pilot tested co-processing biogenic feedstock with conventional crude oil, meeting ISCC standards for sustainable biofuels. By collaborating with Chevron Lummus Global, the refinery modified existing equipment to handle specialty biogenic feedstock efficiently. INA aims to supply the market with SAF by 2029 after obtaining certifications. The Rijeka refinery's green initiatives include a green hydrogen project, utilizing a PV plant and electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen by 2027 for decarbonizing operations. These efforts align with the EU's renewable energy regulations for the transport sector. The refinery's commitment to sustainability extends to modernization programs and seabed remediation, showcasing a comprehensive approach to greener operations.
