YPP Corporation Plans $3.1B Green Hydrogen Project in Kazakhstan
Key Ideas
  • YPP Corporation to invest $3.1 billion in a green hydrogen and ammonia project in Kazakhstan.
  • The project aims to produce 75,000 tonnes/year of green hydrogen, with some converted into 310,000 t/y of green ammonia for export.
  • Up to 2 GW of wind and solar plants will be constructed along with energy storage systems and water supply facilities.
  • Kazakhstan's favorable investment climate and unique natural conditions make it an ideal location for hydrogen energy development.
South Korean company YPP Corporation is planning to invest up to $3.1 billion in a green hydrogen and ammonia project in Kazakhstan. Under an agreement with Kazakh Invest, the project targets the production of 75,000 tonnes/year of green hydrogen, with a portion being converted into 310,000 t/y of green ammonia, mainly for export. The project will involve the construction of up to 2 GW of wind and solar plants, energy storage systems, water supply facilities, and logistics. YPP Corporation is also exploring the potential use of hydrogen in energy, possibly through upgrading combined heat and power plants in the Almaty region. The CEO of YPP Corporation emphasizes Kazakhstan's conducive investment environment and natural advantages for hydrogen energy development, aiming to combine Korean technology with global sustainable production practices. Although the project timeline has not been disclosed, Kazakhstan has set a target of installing 10 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2040 to promote hydrogen production.
