Solvay and Enagás have entered into a partnership to establish a hydrogen storage hub in Polanco, Cantabria, aiming to capitalize on Solvay's proficiency in salt cavern infrastructure and Enagás's experience in energy transport and hydrogen infrastructure. This collaboration aligns with Spain's aspiration to enhance its position as a prominent renewable hydrogen producer and exporter. The project envisions utilizing caverns as a secure, flexible, and expandable solution for storing renewable hydrogen, supporting grid stability and mitigating renewable energy intermittency challenges. Solvay's President expressed gratitude for the partnership with Enagás, emphasizing the chemical industry's pivotal role in advancing clean energy solutions. Similarly, Enagás's CEO highlighted the agreement as a significant advancement in Spain's hydrogen infrastructure, fostering decarbonization goals and enhancing competitiveness at both national and European levels. The project, developed in consultation with local stakeholders, reinforces Solvay's status as a leading salt cavern infrastructure provider in Europe, extending its established presence in Germany to now include Spain.
