European Commission Funds €992 Million for Renewable Hydrogen Projects Across EEA
Key Ideas
  • The European Commission has allocated €992 million to 15 projects in the EEA for renewable hydrogen production, aiming to decarbonize heavy industry and transport.
  • These projects across Germany, Spain, Finland, Norway, and the Netherlands are expected to produce 2.2 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen, reducing over 15 million tonnes of CO2 emissions in a decade.
  • The EU's focus on hydrogen as a key element in the energy transition highlights the importance of clean hydrogen production to mitigate GHG emissions and transition to cleaner energy sources.
  • Future plans include scaling up hydrogen production in Europe, with a budget of up to €1 billion for the next European Hydrogen Bank auction by end 2025 and the launch of a 'Hydrogen Mechanism' platform to facilitate market transactions.
The European Commission has awarded €992 million in funding to 15 projects spread across Germany, Spain, Finland, Norway, and the Netherlands, aimed at producing renewable hydrogen. This initiative is part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions in heavy industry and transport sectors. The projects are projected to generate approximately 2.2 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen over a decade, leading to the avoidance of more than 15 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. Hydrogen is seen as a crucial component in the transition towards cleaner energy, especially for industries and sectors with challenging emissions to abate using traditional renewable sources like wind or solar power. Although around 90 million metric tons of hydrogen are currently produced annually, a significant portion comes from fossil fuels, resulting in pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The development of clean hydrogen, such as green hydrogen produced using renewable energy, necessitates substantial investments in infrastructure, electrolysis, and transportation. The European Commission's investment follows its commitment to upscale hydrogen production in Europe, with plans to enhance renewable hydrogen domestic production. Future auctions under the European Hydrogen Bank are slated, including one at the end of 2025 with a budget of up to €1 billion. Additionally, a 'Hydrogen Mechanism' platform will be introduced to facilitate deals between buyers and sellers in the hydrogen market. Teresa Ribera, EU Commission Executive Vice-President for Clean, Just and Competitive Transition, stressed the importance of building a robust renewable hydrogen market to achieve climate neutrality cost-effectively, thereby enhancing energy independence and promoting job creation.
