Green Hydrogen and Offshore Wind: A Blueprint for Renewable Energy Hubs in Viet Nam
Key Ideas
  • Viet Nam plans to establish two renewable energy hubs, focusing on green hydrogen, offshore wind, and renewable equipment manufacturing.
  • The hubs aim to create industrial clusters, logistics infrastructure, and workforce training to drive the green energy transition.
  • Recommendations from international experts stress the importance of localized offshore wind value chains and aligning manufacturing hubs with electricity demand.
  • The strategy includes a comprehensive regional approach integrating renewable energy equipment manufacturing and direct supply from renewable sources.
Viet Nam is embarking on a strategic initiative to develop two interregional renewable energy industrial and service hubs as part of the National Power Development Plan. These hubs, proposed in areas like Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, and Thai Binh in the north, and Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, and Ho Chi Minh City in the south, will focus on renewable energy generation, including green hydrogen production, offshore wind development, and manufacturing. The Ministry of Industry and Trade, with support from organizations like GIZ, aims to establish a robust value chain and create green industrial parks to facilitate the energy transition. Key recommendations highlight the need for localizing the offshore wind value chain, aligning manufacturing hubs with electricity demand, and establishing specialized training centers near manufacturing sites. The goal is to leverage the country's vast offshore wind potential to achieve targets of 17 GW by 2035 and 139 GW by 2050. By integrating renewable energy equipment manufacturing with electricity generation and adopting a regional industrial ecosystem approach, Viet Nam seeks to lead the ASEAN region in offshore wind and sustainable energy development.
