Hydrogen is recognized as a promising energy carrier for the future due to its cleanliness and efficiency. However, current industrial processes for hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide production heavily rely on fossil fuels. Addressing this challenge, researchers at the University of Padua have developed an innovative organic molecule capable of producing both hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide through distinct nanostructures. By leveraging principles of supramolecular chemistry, the molecule self-assembles into fibrous nanostructures for hydrogen production and particulate nanostructures for hydrogen peroxide production under sunlight. This breakthrough allows for selective modulation of the final product simply by modifying environmental conditions, presenting a significant advancement in photocatalytic processes inspired by natural photosynthesis. The study emphasizes the sustainability of the developed materials, which are organic, free of rare metals, and recyclable, contributing to greener and more economical chemistry. Led by PhD student Marianna Barbieri and Professor Luka Ðorđević, this research, published in 'Advanced Functional Materials,' showcases the power of fundamental research combined with an interdisciplinary vision to create technologies with real societal and environmental impact.
