Lhyfe and Ugitech Partner to Decarbonize Steel Production with Green Hydrogen in France
Key Ideas
  • Lhyfe and Ugitech signed an MoU to establish a green hydrogen production unit at Ugitech’s Ugine site in Savoie, France.
  • The aim is to decarbonize part of Ugitech's operations and contribute to local mobility decarbonization.
  • The partnership plans to utilize green hydrogen to potentially avert 16,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually from steel production.
  • The project's implementation is subject to the feasibility study outcomes, regulatory approvals, permits, and financial decisions.
Lhyfe, a green hydrogen producer, and Ugitech, a subsidiary of Swiss Steel Group, have entered into a memorandum of understanding to set up a green hydrogen production unit at Ugitech’s site in Ugine, Savoie, France. The primary goal of this partnership is to decarbonize a portion of Ugitech's operations and contribute to local efforts in mobility decarbonization. Swiss Steel Group aims to integrate green hydrogen into the Ugitech plant as part of its decarbonization strategy, potentially reducing 16,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year from its steel production of 200,000 tons. This collaboration marks Lhyfe's first venture with a steel manufacturer, with plans to establish a green hydrogen unit capable of producing up to 12 tons per day at the Ugitech plant. The partners are now moving into the feasibility study phase, during which the project's progress will depend on the study results, along with meeting regulatory requirements, obtaining permits, and making financial decisions.
