MOL's Wind Hunter Project: Sailing Towards a Hydrogen Society
Key Ideas
- Mitsui O.S.K. Lines' Wind Hunter Project, selected by Japan's NEDO, focuses on utilizing wind power to produce hydrogen for a hydrogen society.
- The project involves researching optimal wind conditions, building demonstration vessels, and examining hydrogen supply chains for local production and consumption.
- MOL aims to commercialize a demonstration vessel by the 2030s, aligning with their goal to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
- The Wind Hunter project is showcased at Expo 2025 Osaka, promoting sustainable practices and contributing to the reduction of GHG emissions.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has been working on the Wind Hunter Project, an innovative initiative that aims to harness wind power to produce hydrogen, thus contributing to the vision of a hydrogen society. Recently, the project was selected by Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to participate in a research project focused on realizing a hydrogen society. The project, officially named 'Development of Technologies for Realizing a Hydrogen Society / Regional Hydrogen Utilization Technology Development - Hydrogen Production and Utilization Potential Project,' aims to optimize hydrogen production vessels, study ideal wind conditions for green hydrogen energy production at sea, build demonstration vessels, and analyze hydrogen supply chains. MOL's efforts have been well-received by NEDO, leading to their selection for this significant project. In November 2020, MOL initiated the Wind Hunter project, which involves using offshore wind energy to produce hydrogen onboard vessels for onshore consumption, with the goal of achieving a decarbonized, hydrogen-based society. Through various demonstrations and participation in projects like the Tokyo Bay eSG Project, MOL has been at the forefront of green hydrogen production. Looking ahead, MOL targets the commercialization of a demonstration vessel by the 2030s, aligning with their commitment to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The Wind Hunter project's model is currently being showcased at Expo 2025 Osaka, emphasizing MOL's dedication to sustainability and clean energy practices.
