Oman LNG and Kanadevia have joined forces to develop a methanation pilot plant and conduct a commercial concept study aimed at e-methane production. This strategic collaboration is part of Oman's commitment to sustainable energy solutions, supporting the country's Vision 2040 and net-zero targets. By utilizing cutting-edge methanation technology, the project intends to leverage captured CO2 and green hydrogen to produce synthetic methane, known as e-methane. This fuel is envisioned as a scalable and practical way to transport green hydrogen, utilizing Oman's existing LNG infrastructure.
The CEO of Oman LNG, Hamad Al Naamany, has expressed optimism about the initiative, highlighting how innovation can transform environmental challenges into commercial opportunities. The pilot plant, the first phase of this venture, is set to produce around 1,200 normal cubic meters of e-methane per hour, with plans for a future full-scale facility to generate 18,000 normal cubic meters per hour. The Concept Study will explore technical and commercial aspects of the full-scale plant, while the Pre-FEED will delve into detailed design and construction estimates for the pilot plant.
The project will integrate a seawater desalination unit, electrolysis equipment for hydrogen production, and a methanation system to synthesize e-methane from hydrogen and captured CO2. Kanadevia's international expertise, derived from its subsidiaries in Australia and Switzerland, enhances the project's technical capabilities and operational reliability. This partnership between Oman and Kanadevia builds on a prior Memorandum of Understanding and underscores a broader cooperation framework between Oman and Japan in clean energy technologies.
