OMV AG Revolutionizes Energy Production with Austria's Largest Green Hydrogen Plant
Key Ideas
- OMV AG has successfully started up a 10-MW green hydrogen production plant in Vienna, Austria, investing approximately €25 million in the facility.
- The plant can produce up to 1,500 metric tons of green hydrogen annually, powering the production of sustainable fuels like SAF and renewable diesel, saving up to 15,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.
- The initiative aligns with OMV's goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, supported by projects in geothermal energy, sustainable aviation fuel, and chemical recycling, emphasizing the importance of green hydrogen in decarbonization.
- The plant is certified for producing renewable fuel of non-biological origin, supported by the Climate and Energy Fund Austria and the WIVA P&G – Hydrogen Initiative Model Region Austria Power & Gas, with backing from Kommunalkredit during development.
OMV AG in Vienna, Austria, has announced the successful startup of its 10-MW green hydrogen production plant, situated at the Schwechat refinery. This plant is the largest of its kind in Austria and represents a significant step towards sustainable energy production. With an investment of about €25 million, the facility can produce up to 1,500 metric tons of green hydrogen annually. The green hydrogen will be utilized in the production of sustainable fuels and chemicals like sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel, contributing to decarbonization efforts. The plant's polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer is powered entirely by renewable electricity from wind, hydro, and solar sources, resulting in a substantial reduction of up to 15,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions every year. This reduction is equivalent to the CO2 consumption of 2,000 individuals annually.
OMV's Board Member Martijn van Koten highlighted the importance of green hydrogen in transforming essential production processes sustainably, emphasizing its role in decarbonizing the Schwechat site. The company aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, with a focus on flagship projects in geothermal energy, sustainable aviation fuel, and chemical recycling, all of which involve the use of green hydrogen. The plant is certified according to the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (RED II) for producing renewable fuel of non-biological origin. It is supported by various initiatives and funding sources, including the Climate and Energy Fund Austria and the WIVA P&G – Hydrogen Initiative Model Region Austria Power & Gas, with assistance from Kommunalkredit during the project's development phase.
