Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg of Sarawak expressed confidence at the ASEAN Women Economic Summit (AWES) 2025 in Kuala Lumpur that Sarawak could significantly reduce the energy cost of hydrogen production. Through a partnership with Siemens, Sarawak aims to cut the energy consumption from the current 30 kWh/kg to an impressive 10 kWh/kg. This ambitious goal follows successful collaborations with PETRONAS and a Japanese company, which have already led to a considerable reduction in energy consumption for hydrogen production from 60 kWh/kg to 30 kWh/kg. Premier Abang Johari envisions this reduction in costs not only as a technological advancement but also as a strategic move towards aligning with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. The collaboration with Siemens is expected to further optimize hydrogen production processes, allowing Sarawak to contribute to Malaysia's pursuit of a cleaner environment. The panel session, moderated by UOB Malaysia chief executive officer Ng Wei Wei and attended by Federal Deputy Minister of Economy Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib, showcased Sarawak's commitment to sustainability and digitalization, positioning the state as a leader in these crucial areas.
