Seoul's Landfill Management Corporation Leads the Way in Blue-Green Hydrogen Production Technology
Key Ideas
  • Seoul Metropolitan Landfill Management Corporation signed a cooperation agreement to develop large-capacity blue-green hydrogen production technology, aiming to produce 3 tons of blue-green hydrogen per day.
  • The project involves using domestic plasma and low-temperature adsorption technology to convert landfill and urban gases into carbon-free hydrogen, addressing carbon emissions concerns.
  • The initiative also focuses on exploring by-products such as solid carbon and waste heat generated during the production process for additional utilization and safety considerations.
  • Through this project, the corporation aims to create a resource-circulating platform for clean energy, contribute to urban hydrogen supply chains, and support national policies on carbon neutrality.
The Seoul Metropolitan Landfill Management Corporation in Daejeon, South Korea, recently signed a cooperation agreement for the development of large-capacity blue-green hydrogen production technology. The project involves 11 research institutes and three beneficiary companies working towards producing 3 tons of blue-green hydrogen per day using domestic plasma and low-temperature adsorption technology. Blue-green hydrogen, known for its carbon-free production process, is generated by pyrolyzing hydrocarbon-based fuels at high temperatures to separate hydrogen and solid carbon. The initiative aims to explore by-products like solid carbon and waste heat for further utilization. President Song Byung-eok highlighted the significance of this agreement in establishing a clean hydrogen-based future energy system, emphasizing cooperation between the public and private sectors. The project's objectives include creating a resource-circulating platform for converting landfill gas into clean energy and supporting urban hydrogen supply chains. This initiative aligns with national policies on carbon neutrality, showcasing a commitment to sustainable energy practices.
