Bradford College's new £17 million city centre development, Junction Mills, has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of its four-storey steel frame. The building, located on Thornton Road in Bradford, is dedicated to providing specialist training in motor vehicle, advanced electrical, hybrid, and hydrogen technologies when it opens to students in September 2026. Led by construction company Morgan Sindall, the project aims to support the growth of low-carbon skills capabilities within West Yorkshire. With a framework that includes 232 tonnes of hot-rolled steel, the building incorporates modern construction methods such as off-site manufacturing of precast elements like lift shafts and stairs. Following the completion of the steel frame, the next steps involve metal decking and concrete floor slab works. Pamela Sheldon, the Head of Projects at Bradford College, expressed excitement about the project, highlighting the focus on delivering cutting-edge automotive training for the future. The funding of £15 million from the Department for Education, along with a £2 million contribution from the College, has made this initiative possible. Ben Hall, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction's Yorkshire business, emphasized the positive impact the new facility will have on Bradford and mentioned plans for social value initiatives. This development is part of Bradford College's ongoing efforts to enhance its facilities, with recent projects including the Garden Mills facility and new T Level training facilities. The Junction Mills project signifies a significant leap in equipping students with skills needed for a low-carbon economy and underscores the commitment to sustainability in construction.
